Birthday Part II

3.28.2011

Yesterday, for my birthday, Matt took me into Manhattan for the day to check out the Whitney Museum, have delicious pizza and go to the Top of the Rock observation deck. We were all over the city- Midtown, Upper East Side, Central Park, Union Square.. we walked so much. I slept for 12 hours that night- not kidding. That's probably why I'm awake right now. Ah, look at this view..

I'd never been to the Top of the Rock, but I've been wanting to go so badly. The view of the city is so beautiful from the observation deck. There's an observation deck at the top of the Empire State Building as well, but there's one major problem with that- you can't see the Empire State Building from the top of the Empire State Building!

We had really amazing pizza for lunch near Union Square. I'll have to ask Matt the name of the place tomorrow because I can't remember and it's driving me nuts. The restaurant was Motorino on 12th between 1st and 2nd (thanks Matthew!) I probably should have taken a picture of that pizza masterpiece, but I was distracted by the beer situation. I thought it was pretty funny that Matt's beer came in a nice bottle while mine came in the classiest orange can. I guess that's what I get for ordering a "Porkslap," but I really wanted an IPA!

The Whitney Museum was really nice. It was the first museum completely dedicated to featuring the work of living American artists. It had a similar feel to the MoMA, but it was smaller and although it was busy for a Saturday afternoon, it wasn't as busy as I'm sure the MoMA was.

The exhibit in the image above was really interesting. It was a collection of the front pages of different news papers that each featured an image of a lunar eclipse -all from the same year. All the text and other stories had been deleted showing how different publications gave the lunar eclipse story different amounts of page coverage- I suppose this showed how important the eclipse was to each newspaper.

I'm so glad we made the Hopper exhibit. It's up until April 10th and I didn't even know it was there to begin with, so it was a very nice surprise. 2 of his paintings can be seen below and I have no idea whether I was allowed to snap those or not.. oh well. I was stealthy.

The whole day was a surprise and I had so much fun. I guess being 26 won't be so terrible. It still sounds old though.
