The Cabin in the Woods

Yosemite National Park / June 18-22, 2011

Every morning in Yosemite we woke up, took a step outside and looked up. How can such a place exist? It's so different than what you see when you look up on the streets of NY, yet geography tells us both places are on the same planet.. the same continent even.

This is why I love to travel.. the town next door, a different state, a foreign country. Everywhere you go there is something to marvel at that probably seems commonplace to the city's own inhabitants. When you travel, see the sights, and venture home your eyes are opened to some of the draw of your own hometown.

I'm constantly making an effort to look at my home town and home city the way a traveler would see it. People travel from all over this world to see Manhattan.. that's an amazing thing. When Matt and I traveled back from California we decided to pretend we were travelers going to visit the amazing island of Manhattan, instead of travelers going home.

These photos make me a little homesick, even though it was only "home" for a few days.

Yosemite, I'll definitely come back to see you.

  1. I can totally relate to this! After living in a fairly large town in South Eastern Ontario.. discovering the prairies and mountains on the other end of this country was a big eye opener for me. When I went home after a long period of time, I started noticing things I never had before, like the landscape, the buildings, etc. I grew a whole new appreciation for it.. and that's why I think it's SO important for people to travel.. even if it is just to a nearby town or lake, etc.

It's funny how even a place like New York can become dull to someone living in it!

I think it's always good to get out of the city .. interesting the yin and yang of life.

  6. That is a wonderful way to look at the world. You do live very close to a city people rave about very often. I know so many people who want to live in NYC and I like it there from my only visit to the city. I just can't live there. City life makes me too anxious! Too many people, not enough personal.

Viewing everywhere as a traveler (did Anthony Bourdain coin the phrase don't be a tourist, be a traveler?) will continually make your travels a refreshing experience. I don't even know all of my small town and I haven't been to our only landmark in a few months now. It makes you want to not take these things for granted.

  16. Your Yosemite photos are to die for (but not... I hate that expression, it's so silly but it feels appropriate in this instance!). They are making me want to go so badly!!

Hope you are enjoying rediscovering NY.
